An American who lost touch with his Polish roots, discovers a forgotten safe deposit box where he finds his deceased grandmother's memoirs. She writes about her husband, a Polish officer who was on a Soviet hit list and after he was killed, she and her sons along with 2 milion other Polish families were deported to Siberia. Whithin a year, over half were dead. The few that did escape found themselves pawns of both British and US agencies that told them they cannot discuss what happened.
